Notes

This Roll of Honour was pre-printed in colour, with spaces for names to be added by hand. The way in which names were added tells a story. They appear to have been added as the war progressed. The first batch of names, 30 in all, were written in alphabetic sequence from BELFIELD W E to YESSON J H. They filled about three-quarters of the space reserved for names. Presumably these men enlisted at the beginning of the war. Perhaps the elders of the Sunday School hoped that would be enough. But the war dragged on. More men enlisted, more names were added. Subtle differences in the handwriting and formatting indicates that names were added in small batches over time. They filled all the space reserved for them, then expanded down both side margins, and eventually into the top and bottom margins. As the war progressed boxes were drawn round some of the names. Those names also appear on the war memorial. The final total was 113 scholars who served, of whom 10 died.

In the transcription it is not possible to show boxes, so have put the relevant names in bold.

I had some difficulty in reading the handwritten script on this document. I believe I have transcribed the names correctly, but am unsure about a few of the initials. Some forename initials merge with regimental initials, it was difficult to determine where one ended and the other began. Where needed to clarify the transcription I have put a comma between the two. The comma is not present on the original document, it is my interpretation, and may be wrong.
