A memorial to George Ward Gunn, VC, MC who fell in the second world war.

Inscription

George Ward Gunn, VC, MC
Ward Gunn was born in Neston in 1912, the son of Dr George
Gunn, who practiced medicine in Neston between 1911 and 1945.
Ward and his three younger brothers were educated in Parkgate
at Mostyn House School.

At the outbreak of the Second World War, Ward Gunn joined
the Royal Horse Artillery, and was sent to North Africa as a
2nd Lieutenant in Charge of four anti-tank guns. In May 1941
he was awarded the Military Cross after showing gallantry and
coolness under fire on several occasions.

On 21st November 1941, Ward Gunn was helping to defend the
airfield as Sidi Rezegh, in the Libyan desert. After three of
his guns and all but one of his men had been put out of action
he continued to fire accurately at a large number of enemy
tanks, until he fell dead. For this act of conspicuous courage
Ward Gunn was awarded the Victoria Cross.

Some of his friends endowed a bed to his memory at the Neston
Cottage Hospital. When the hospital closed in 1964, the
commemorative plaque was placed here.
