Location

In The Armoury, Greek St, Stockport.

Description

Three wooden panels, hinged, opening to show the names of members of the Stockport Branch of the Old Contemptibles Association.

The "Old Contemptibles" were soldiers who had served pre-war in the professional British Army and who became the first British soldiers to be sent into France at the beginning of WW1. They served in France and Flanders between 4th August and 22nd November 1914 and received the 1914 Star, the Old Contemptibles medal. The name came from a comment by a senior German soldier "that contemptible little army".
