Notes

The British Midland Airways Argonaut aircraft on a flight from Palma, Majorca, crashed at Hopes Carr in the centre of Stockport. It was approaching to land at Ringway Airport when two of its four engines stopped. One engine had been starved of fuel by a fault in the aircraft's fuel system. It is less clear why the other engine stopped. It may have been due to confusion about which engine had failed resulting in a good engine being shut down by the crew.

Twelve survivors were thrown clear or extracted by rescuers who managed to clamber into the crumpled wreckage before a fuel fire caught hold. The remaining seventy-two passengers and crew perished.

The crash occured at 10 a.m. in the middle of a densely populated area. It is a miracle that no-one on the ground was killed.

An Argonaut was a Canadian built and British engined version of the Douglas DC4 airliner.
