The birth of a song, Stalybridge.

The birth of a song, Stalybridge.

Location

On the wall outside Judge's Bar, Corporation Street, Stalybridge.

Description

A marble plaque in memory of Jack Judge who wrote the song It's a long way to Tipperary at this location in 1912. The song became a well used marching song during the first world war.

There are those who argue that the song was written on the train on the way to Stalybridge, but it is reasonably certain that it had its first performance in Stalybridge's Grand Theatre which faces Judge's Bar, and part of which is now the Tipperary Tea Rooms.
