War Memorials, St George, Stalybridge.

War Memorial, New St George, Stalybridge.

Location

In St George's Church, Stalybridge.

Description

In this church there are three war memorials showing three different lists of St George's parishioners who lost their lives in the first world war. The explanation for this puzzle is as follows.

In Stalybridge there were two churches with the same name.

The new church was intended as a replacement for the old. However, when it had been built, a dispute arose between those in charge of the two churches. The Old refused to die. For 127 years the two St George's, within a quarter mile of each-other, competed to attract worshipers.

At long last, in 1967 not far short of its 200th birthday, the Old's building succumbed to ground subsidence and had to be closed. The Old's war memorial was then re-located into the New church which already had its own memorial. Thus the two St George's war memorials really do represent different congregations. They were later joined by a third memorial, taken from St George's School when it closed.

The New St George's war memorial is a collage dedicating a memorial window. It lists the names of "members of this parish" who "sacrificed their lives" in WW1.

The St George's School war memorial is a set of wooden wall panels. It lists the names of "members of this church and sunday school" who were "killed in action" during WW1. It also shows lists of those who were wounded, those who served in the armed forces, and the names of the Vicar and Churchwardens.

The Old St George's war memorial is a brass plaque. It lists the names of those "from church and school" who "sacrificed their lives" in WW1. It also lists those who fell in WW2.
