Description

A modest sized stone column, surmounted by a sundial, and in the centre of a square paved area. The names of members of the Bickerton family are laid out in metal letters on the sides of the column and on some of the paving stones.

Notes

Henry N Bickerton was an engineer. In 1889 he founded the National Gas & Oil Engine Company, a successful manufacturer of horizontal gas engines at a large factory in Ashton-under-Lyne. In 1907 he helped to found Mirrlees Bickerton and Day Limited, a manufacturer of large marine Diesel engines at a factory in Hazel Grove.

He bought Thornycroft Hall in 1911.
