Inscription: George Dalgliesh. 42 years a public official - 28 of which he was the highly respected Chief Constable of the Borough of Ashton-under-Lyne who died Oct 10th 1888 age 62 years. "True till Death".

He was the Chief Guardian of the public peace in stirring and troubled periods as well as quiet and tranquil times in the history of the town. There were many occasions during his official term requiring on his part great tact, courage, and determination of purpose, but his conduct during these critical and exciting events was praiseworthy nad gave general satisfaction to the authorities. Day or night "where duty called or danger, he was never wanting there".

He was a strict disciplinarian yet was popular with the members of the Police Force and the Fire Brigade and regarded with feelings of respect and confidence by his officers and the rank and file.

He was an able exponent of the criminal and licencing laws, a sound adviser to those in trouble, a true patriot, faithful citizen, amiable husband, generous father, affectionate brother and sincere friend.

He had the respect and esteem of the Council and the inhabitants of the town and district generally.
