Weir Head Cottage, Compstall, Cheshire.

A pair of semi-detached cottages in Etherow Country Park. In the 1880s they was known as Weir Head, and later as Weir Cottages. The river Etherow tumbles 20 feet over the nearby weir.

Water from the weir once powered the mill at Compstall Bridge. Later the channel down to the mill was use by barges carrying coal from a local pit.

The bridge overlooking the weir stands on ancient buttresses, but the span appears to be a Bailey Bridge of world war two vintage.
